Makalu

The Makalu Region, home to Mount Makalu (8,485 m), the world’s fifth-highest peak, is a paradise for trekkers seeking untouched wilderness.

Located within Makalu-Barun National Park, landscapes shift dramatically from lush subtropical valleys to glaciers and high passes, offering a rare combination of tropical forests and eight-thousand-meter peaks.

Two valleys define the region: Arun Valley, one of the world’s deepest, lined with terraced farms and Rai and Sherpa villages, and Barun Valley, wilder and more dramatic, with waterfalls, glaciers, and cliffs. Shivadhara, a cliff shrine with a year-round waterfall, adds spiritual significance. The Makalu Base Camp Trek and side trips to Shershong meadows offer trekking experiences with minimal crowds.

The park shelters over 3,000 plant species, including rhododendrons and orchids, as well as rare wildlife like red panda, snow leopard, musk deer, and Himalayan tahr. Birdwatchers can spot high-altitude raptors and colorful sunbirds. Makalu is ideal for travelers seeking solitude, authentic village life, and dramatic Himalayan scenery.
